Comparing Elafiti Islands: Lopud vs Šipan vs Koločep — Which to Visit? (2026)

The Elafiti Islands are Dubrovnik’s island paradise — three inhabited islands (plus several smaller ones) offering beaches, villages, and car-free tranquility. But if you only have one day, which island should you visit? Lopud, Šipan, or Koločep all have different characters, and the right choice depends on what you’re looking for.

At Rent Boat Dubrovnik, we’ve been taking visitors to the Elafiti Islands for 15 years. Our co-founders Gari and Mislav know every cove, restaurant, and beach on all three islands. This guide compares them honestly so you can make the best choice for your boat trip.

Koločep — The Intimate Escape

Distance from Marina Frapa: 25 minutes
Size: 2.4 km²

What You’ll Find

Koločep is the smallest and closest inhabited Elafiti island. Two tiny villages (Gornje Čelo and Donje Čelo) are connected by a walking path through pine forests. No cars, no crowds, no noise — just Adriatic peace.

Best Beaches

  • Betina Cave Beach: Tiny beach inside a sea cave — magical swimming
  • Donje Čelo Beach: Village beach with facilities
  • Hidden coves: Explore the western coast by boat for secluded spots

Blue Cave

Koločep is home to the famous Blue Cave (Modra Špilja). When sunlight enters through an underwater opening, the cave glows ethereal blue. Best visited 10 AM – 1 PM.

Dining

Limited options but excellent quality:

  • Villa Ruža: Fine dining, reservations recommended
  • Konoba Bibilje: Traditional seafood, casual atmosphere

Best For

  • Couples seeking romance and privacy
  • Snorkeling and swimming enthusiasts
  • Those with limited time (closest island)
  • Blue Cave visit as the main attraction

Lopud — The Beach Paradise

Distance from Marina Frapa: 40 minutes
Size: 4.6 km²

What You’ll Find

Lopud was once one of the wealthiest islands in the Adriatic, and traces of its Venetian grandeur remain. The single village has churches, monasteries, and grand captain’s houses. But most visitors come for one reason: Šunj Beach.

Best Beaches

  • Šunj Beach: The crown jewel — wide sandy beach, shallow water, beach bar. The best sand beach near Dubrovnik.
  • Village beaches: Pebble beaches near the harbor

Walking & Exploring

A path leads from the village to Šunj Beach (20-minute walk through olive groves). Alternatively, hike to the fortress at the island’s highest point for panoramic views.

Dining

Lopud has the best restaurant scene of the three islands:

  • Obala: Upscale seafood with harbor views
  • Dubrovnik Maslina: Local cuisine, family-run
  • Beach bars at Šunj: Casual lunch and drinks

Best For

  • Families with children (Šunj is perfect for kids)
  • Beach lovers who want sand, not pebbles
  • Day-trippers who want multiple activities
  • Those who appreciate history and architecture

Šipan — The Authentic Experience

Distance from Marina Frapa: 55 minutes
Size: 16.5 km² (largest Elafiti island)

What You’ll Find

Šipan is the least touristy of the three islands despite being the largest. Two villages — Šipanska Luka and Suđurađ — have different characters. The interior is covered with olive groves and vineyards. Šipan feels like stepping back in time.

Best Beaches

  • Pakljena Beach: Sandy beach on the northern coast
  • Šipanska Luka beaches: Several small beaches around the main harbor
  • Suđurađ coves: Quieter options near the southeastern village

History & Exploration

Šipan has more historical sites than the other islands:

  • Rector’s Palace (16th century)
  • Romanesque churches
  • Old fortified towers
  • Active olive oil production

Dining

Šipan is a food destination:

  • Kod Marka: Famous for fresh fish and local wine
  • Konoba Kremenko: Traditional dishes in Šipanska Luka
  • Tavern Donje Polje: Farm-to-table experience

Best For

  • Food and wine enthusiasts
  • Those seeking authenticity over tourism
  • Visitors wanting to explore by foot or bike
  • Longer, more relaxed day trips

Our Recommendation: Visit All Three

If you have 6-8 hours, the ideal Elafiti itinerary includes all three islands:

  1. 9:00 AM: Depart Marina Frapa
  2. 9:25 AM: Koločep — Blue Cave + swimming (1 hour)
  3. 10:45 AM: Cruise to Lopud (20 min)
  4. 11:05 AM: Lopud — Šunj Beach + lunch (3 hours)
  5. 2:15 PM: Cruise to Šipan (30 min)
  6. 2:45 PM: Šipan — Coffee, stroll, maybe an afternoon swim (1.5 hours)
  7. 4:15 PM: Return cruise to Dubrovnik
  8. 5:00 PM: Arrive Marina Frapa

Which Boat for Elafiti Islands?

Budget: Pasara (€150) — Good for Koločep only (closest island)

Best value: Cap Camarat 6.5 (€300) — Comfortable for all three islands

For groups: Quicksilver 755 (€400) — Fast, spacious, perfect for full-day island hopping
