At Rent Boat Dubrovnik, we’ve helped thousands of GoT fans explore filming sites over the years. Our skippers know every location and can position the boat for perfect photo recreations. Whether you rent a boat yourself or join a guided tour, this guide covers every Game of Thrones spot you can reach by water.
Why Explore Game of Thrones Locations by Boat?
Many of the show’s most dramatic scenes featured Dubrovnik’s coastline:
- Blackwater Bay battle — The wildfire explosion was filmed on the waters you’ll cruise
- King’s Landing harbor — Ships arrived beneath the city walls
- Cersei’s walk of shame ending — The Red Keep doors are visible from the sea
- Daenerys arriving at Dragonstone — The dramatic cliffs and caves
Walking tours can’t access these water-level views. A boat puts you exactly where the cameras were positioned.
Game of Thrones Filming Locations by Boat
1. King’s Landing City Walls — The Iconic Skyline
Location: Dubrovnik Old Town walls
Scenes: Every exterior shot of King’s Landing
Cruise along the southern city walls for the definitive King’s Landing view. The medieval fortifications, Minčeta Tower (the House of the Undying), and Fort Bokar appear exactly as they did in the show. Best photographed in morning light when the walls glow golden.
2. Blackwater Bay — The Battle Site
Location: Waters between Old Town and Lokrum
Scenes: Battle of Blackwater Bay (Season 2), Stannis’s fleet arrival
The waters outside the old port are where Tyrion unleashed wildfire on Stannis’s fleet. Cruise through “Blackwater Bay” and imagine the chaos of the battle that changed the war.
3. Pile Harbor — Where Ships Arrived
Location: Small bay west of Old Town
Scenes: Littlefinger departing, various ship arrivals
This small harbor served as the main port of King’s Landing in the show. Approach by boat to see the medieval arches and stone quay where countless scenes were filmed.
4. Fort Lovrijenac — The Red Keep Exterior
Location: Fortress west of Old Town
Scenes: Joffrey’s name day tournament, Red Keep balconies
The fortress rising 37 meters above the sea served as the exterior Red Keep in numerous scenes. From the water, you see the same imposing clifftop view that established King’s Landing as an impregnable city.
5. Lokrum Island — Qarth Filming Location
Location: Island 600m from Old Town
Scenes: Qarth gardens (Season 2), reception of Daenerys
The Benedictine monastery on Lokrum and its gardens were transformed into the exotic city of Qarth. The “Garden of Bones” scenes and Daenerys’s reception were filmed here. Anchor at Lokrum and walk to the monastery ruins.
6. Trsteno Arboretum — Tyrell Gardens
Location: 20km northwest of Dubrovnik
Scenes: Lady Olenna and Margaery Tyrell’s plotting, “Tell Cersei” scene
The 500-year-old Renaissance gardens served as the Tyrell family gardens in King’s Landing. Cruise to Trsteno, anchor at the small beach below, and walk up to explore where Olenna Tyrell delivered some of the show’s most memorable lines.
7. Hotel Belvedere Ruins — Daenerys’s Throne Room
Location: Abandoned hotel south of Old Town
Scenes: House of the Undying interiors, Mother of Dragons visions
While not directly accessible by boat, you can see the abandoned hotel’s dramatic clifftop location from the water. The surreal structure adds to the otherworldly atmosphere.
