Booking Direct vs Viator: What You Actually Save

Boats moored at Marina Frapa Dubrovnik, the departure point for Rent Boat Dubrovnik direct bookings

In short

Why the same Dubrovnik boat tour costs 15–20% less booked direct with Rent Boat Dubrovnik than via Viator or GetYourGuide: the commission maths and what you keep. Written by Rent Boat Dubrovnik, the direct-booking fleet at Marina Frapa Dubrovnik; prices quoted are from our price list as of 5 October 2026 and apply when you book direct.

There is a number that travel marketplaces never print on the booking page: the commission they charge the operator who actually runs the trip. Every tour sold through Viator, GetYourGuide or a similar platform pays a percentage of the ticket price back to the platform. Industry reporting consistently puts that figure in the 20–30% range, and GetYourGuide’s own supplier page confirms that operators are “charged a commission fee for bookings that are successful”, with the exact rate disclosed only after sign-up.

That commission does not vanish. It is built into the price you see, because a small operator cannot absorb a quarter of its revenue and still pay the skipper, the fuel and the marina berth.

The direct-booking maths

When you book the same boat or tour directly with Rent Boat Dubrovnik, there is no platform in the middle, so there is no platform fee to recover. We price our direct listings so that you keep most of that difference. In practice, booking direct typically works out 15–20% cheaper than the equivalent listing on a marketplace.

A worked example with today’s direct prices (as of 2026-10-05):

  • Private Blue Cave tour (Koločep), 4 hours, up to 12 guests: €280 per group, skipper and fuel included.
  • Private Elaphiti Islands day, 8 hours, up to 12 guests: €500 per group, skipper and fuel included.
  • Group Blue Cave tour: €60 per person; group Elaphiti day with lunch: €65 per person.
  • Private sunset cruise, 2 hours: €250 per group; group sunset cruise: €30 per person.
  • Pasara 5 HP self-drive, no licence needed: €150 for a half-day or €200 for a full day, fuel included.

Take any of those figures, add the commission a marketplace would need to recover on top, and you arrive at the kind of number you would see on a third-party listing. We would rather you saw the direct number first.

What you do not lose by booking direct

Marketplaces sometimes imply that going direct means giving up protection. For a boat rental or boat tour, the protection that actually matters is the same either way:

  • Card protection. Direct bookings are paid through Stripe Checkout, a regulated card processor. Your bank’s chargeback rights for fraud or non-delivery are identical to those on any marketplace purchase.
  • Weather refunds. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure with a full refund. If DHMZ, the Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service, issues a marine wind warning for your day, we cancel and refund 100% — even inside 24 hours. Cancellations inside 24 hours for other reasons are non-refundable, but we will rebook you into the next available slot free of charge whenever we can.
  • Insurance. Third-party liability insurance is included with every rental; full policy terms are available on request before you book. The cover is attached to the boat and the operator, not to the website you booked through.
  • The operator. You are dealing with the registered Croatian charter operator Technic One d.o.o. (OIB 63056167991), the same legal entity that runs the trips listed on the marketplaces. The boat, the skipper and the departure point at Marina Frapa Dubrovnik do not change.

What the saving pays for

Because nothing leaks to a platform, direct bookings let us put the margin back into the trip rather than into marketing fees:

  • A human on WhatsApp at +385 91 600 1201 who knows the boats and the forecast, not a ticketing help desk.
  • Flexible rebooking when the weather turns, instead of a form queue.
  • Maintenance, safety equipment and fuel — the things that make a day on the Adriatic actually good.

Where a marketplace still helps

There is an honest argument for Viator or GetYourGuide: discoverability. If you genuinely do not know which Dubrovnik operator to trust, a marketplace’s review filter lets you compare several side by side. Use it for research. Read the reviews, pick the operator you like, then look that operator up and book direct. You will almost always find the same trip for less, with a direct line to the people who run it.

Four questions to ask before you book anywhere

  1. Where exactly does the boat depart? Ours leave from Marina Frapa Dubrovnik, Lapadska obala 21a — about 15 minutes by taxi from the Old Town. (Not to be confused with Marina Frapa Rogoznica near Šibenik, roughly 230 km up the coast.)
  2. Is fuel included? On our tours, yes. On self-drive boats, fuel is included on the Pasara 5 HP; on every other boat it is charged according to what you actually use, settled at the marina when you return.
  3. What happens if the wind picks up? Ask who decides and what the refund is. Our rule is written above and applies whether you booked a week ago or yesterday.
  4. Who do I message on the morning? With a direct booking you have our number and we have yours. With a marketplace booking, the operator often only receives your details shortly before the trip.

What to do today

Open Viator or GetYourGuide. Search “Dubrovnik boat tour” and note the price of the trip you like. Then compare it with our boat tours and fleet pages, or send the date and group size to WhatsApp +385 91 600 1201 and we will confirm availability and a secure payment link. The season runs April to October, and summer weekends fill first, so the earlier you ask, the better the choice of slot.
